Production regulations of the Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin
Vermentino di Gallura

Article 1
The Vermentino di Gallura controlled and guaranteed designation of origin is reserved for white wine, already recognized as a controlled designation of origin with Presidential Decree of 24 March 1975, which meets the conditions and requirements established by this production specification.
The Vermentino di Gallura controlled and guaranteed designation of origin wine can also be produced in the superior type provided it meets the particular requirements established in this regard by this production specification.

Article 2
The Vermentino di Gallura wine with controlled and guaranteed denomination of origin must be obtained from grapes coming from vineyards having, within the company, the following ampelographic composition: Vermentino, from 95 to 100%.
Other non-aromatic white grape varieties recommended and / or authorized for the province of Sassari, present in the vineyards up to a maximum of 5%, can contribute to the production of this wine.

Article 3
The grapes for the production of Vermentino di Gallura controlled and guaranteed designation of origin wines must come from the geographically defined territory of Gallura.
This production area includes the entire territory of the municipalities of Aggius, Aglientu, Arzachena, Badesi, Berchidda, Bortigadas, Calangianus, Golfo Aranci, Loiri Porto San Paolo, Luogosanto, Luras, Monti, Olbia, Oschiri, Palau, S. Antonio di Gallura, S. Teresa di Gallura, Telti, Tempio Pausania, Trinità dAgulto, Viddalba in the province of Sassari and the entire territory of the municipalities of Budoni and S. Teodoro in the province of Nuoro.

Article 4
The environmental and cultivation conditions of the vineyards destined for the production of the Vermentino di Gallura wine of controlled and guaranteed denomination of origin must be the traditional ones of the area and, in any case, suitable for giving the grapes and wine the specific quality characteristics.
Therefore, the suitable vineyards of exposure and position, created as a result of granite breakup and located at an altitude of no more than 500 meters above sea level, should only be considered suitable.
The sixth planting, the forms of training and the pruning systems must be such as not to change the characteristics of the grapes, musts and wines.
Any forcing practice is prohibited.
Rescue irrigation is allowed for no more than two operations before veraison.
New plants and replantings must have a minimum of 3,250 plants per hectare.
The production of grapes per hectare of vineyards in specialized cultivation for the production of the wine with denomination of controlled and guaranteed origin Vermentino di Gallura must not exceed 10 tons.
For the Superior type, this yield must not exceed 9 tons.
The average production must not exceed 3 kg per vine for both types.
In favorable vintages, the quantities of grapes obtained and to be destined for the production of wines with controlled and guaranteed designation of origin Vermentino di Gallura must be reported within the limits set out above, provided that the overall production does not exceed the limits by 20%, without prejudice to the limits grape-wine yield for the quantities in question.
The Region of Sardinia, with its own decree, after hearing the trade organizations concerned, may establish from year to year, before the harvest, a limit of grape production per hectare lower than those set in this specification, giving immediate communication to the National Committee for protection of denominations of origin of wines.
In the designation of the Vermentino di Gallura wine with controlled and guaranteed designation of origin, the mention vineyard can be used provided that it is followed by the corresponding toponym, that the relative surface is distinctly specified in the Register of vineyards, that the winemaking and storage of the wine take place in containers separated and that this mention, followed by the toponym, is reported both in the denunciation of the grapes, both in the registers and in the accompanying documents.

Article 5
The grapes destined for the vinification of the Vermentino di Gallura controlled and guaranteed designation of origin must have a minimum natural alcoholic strength by volume of 11% and 12% for the higher type.
In winemaking, only the oenological practices capable of giving the wines their own peculiar characteristics and enrichment under the conditions established by the Community and national rules are allowed, without prejudice to the yields of wine referred to in the following paragraph.
The maximum yield of the grapes in finished wine, ready for consumption, must not exceed 70%. If it exceeds this limit, but not 75% of the surplus, it is not entitled to the denomination of controlled and guaranteed origin. Over 75% of the right to the controlled and guaranteed designation of origin for the entire product lapses.
The winemaking operations must be carried out within the area delimited by article 3; bottling must be carried out exclusively within the Sardinia region.
Vermentino di Gallura controlled and guaranteed designation of origin wine cannot be released for consumption before January 15 of the year following the year of production of the grapes.

Article 6.
Vermentino di Gallura controlled and guaranteed designation of origin wine referred to in Article 2, when released for consumption, must meet the following characteristics:
- color: straw yellow with light greenish reflections;
- smell: subtle intense, delicate perfume;
- flavor: alcoholic, soft, slightly bitter aftertaste;
- minimum total alcoholic strength by volume: 12%;
- maximum sugar residue: 5 g / l;
- minimum total acidity: 4.5 per thousand;
- minimum net dry extract: 16 per thousand.
It is the faculty of the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Resources - National Committee for the protection and enhancement of wines with a controlled designation of origin and typical geographical indications to modify by their own decree the minimum limits indicated for total acidity and net dry extract.

Article 7
The Vermentino di Gallura wine with controlled and guaranteed designation of origin obtained from grapes with a minimum total natural alcoholic strength by volume of 12% which is released for consumption with a minimum total alcoholic strength of not less than 13% can carry the higher qualification on the label.
Vermentino di Gallura controlled and guaranteed designation of origin wine must undergo a chemical-physical and organoleptic analysis in the production phase and a further organoleptic examination in the previous bottling phase.

Article 8.
The addition of any qualification other than that provided for in this production specification, including the adjectives extra, fine, chosen, selected and the like, is prohibited from the controlled and guaranteed designation of origin referred to in article 1.
Vermentino di Gallura controlled and guaranteed designation of origin wine must be released for consumption in bottles or other containers with a capacity of no more than five liters, bearing the state mark - pursuant to article 23 of law no. 164 - applied in such a way as to prevent the contents from being extracted without inactivating the label itself.
