In a country as small as Cyprus, where many people live close to the countryside and the Mediterranean climate, you can’t get a better fruit tree than the citrus. Citrus- or stone fruits are one of the most popular fruits all over the world, not only due to their taste, but also because they have a short maturation period. This means that the fruits will be harvested in their best stage of ripeness, just when you want to eat them.

Citrus fruits, like orange and lemon, can be eaten as fresh fruit, juice, or other culinary preparations. They’re great as gifts, or just enjoyed at home.

All citrus trees – whether you grow them for commercial purposes or just for personal pleasure – should be protected from pests, but not as much as commercial orchards. The reason for this is that the pests attack the trees in early spring, when it’s cold outside and the fruit is in dormancy. The pests lay their eggs, the larvae hatch, and in the following summer they eat the fruit, thus ensuring the fruit’s growth. If you decide to grow citrus trees, you should look for trees that are genetically healthy, and that are free of any external physical damage.

Here are a few of the most popular Citrus species grown in Cyprus:

Citrus aurantifolia ‘Omotesansh’

Citrus aurantifolia is the most important orange in Cyprus. It is a hybrid between C. sinensis (sweet orange) and C. grandis (Mexican orange). Its fruit is an oval shape with a thin skin, orange juice with a sweet taste, and an acidic pH, so it’s the perfect “starter” for the amateur grower. The trees are often considered to be the “work horses” of commercial orchards, because their trees are reliable and healthy, and because they produce a lot of fruit. The trees are disease-resistant and they are often used in combination with other Citrus species.

Seville orange (Citrus aurantifolia x Citrus sinensis)

This is a cross between the hybrid Mexican-orange, C. aurantifolia, and the Seville orange, C. sinensis. It is resistant to Cissus rot (a.k.a. “tree killer”), and its fruits have the aroma and flavor of the Seville orange, making it the favorite of bakers and confectioners in the Mediterranean region. The fruits are smaller than the Mexican-orange, and much less acidic. It’s an excellent tree for the home orchard.

Lemon (Citrus medica limonum)

This is a native of Southeast Asia, and it is the main Citrus species grown in Cyprus. Its flowers are large and fragrant, and the fruits, also known as Lemons or limes, are a popular ingredient in marmalades. Like the lime tree, it’s a subtropical tree that bears small, round and edible fruits. It’s highly susceptible to canker, though this is a minor problem, and the “limeless” fruits are milder than those of the lime tree.

Kumquat (Fortunella japonica ‘Shishitosuyukika’)

The name means “beautiful peony” in Japanese, and the fruits resemble the small, seed-less, bright red berry of the peony flower. Its fruits are eaten raw, baked in cakes, or used to make preserves. The tree is a cross between the Asian pummelo and the sweet orange, and its small fruits are considered to be among the best in taste. It’s one of the favorite varieties of the kumquat farmer in Cyprus.

Mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata)

This is the most important Citrus variety of Cyprus, and it is cultivated for its fruit. It’s a large, oblong, fragrant fruit that turns green when ripe. It’s highly sensitive to cold, and if it does not get enough heat, the fruit may be lost. It’s one of the main sources of fresh juice in Cyprus.
