Donkey breeds: Donkey from the Pyrenees

Origins and attitudes

Franco-Spanish breed. The Dorigo areas are:
- north-east of Spain (Catalonia) where it is called Catalan and has always been used for the production of mules;
- south and south-west of France (ancient province of Gascony and the Pyrenees chain, now falling within the departments of Gironde, Landes, Pyrenees-Atlantique, Hautes-Pyrénées, Haute-Garonne, Ariège, Lot-et -Garonne, Tarn-et-Garonne, Gers, Aude and Pyrénées-Orientali) where it was often called Gascon and used for transportation. Given the vatity of the Dorigo area, the variety of biotopes and the various impoegos, many were the types identified in the past, both in France and Spain.

In 1994 the Association for the protection of the Donkey of the Pyrenees was founded with the aim of saving this breed from extinction and enhancing its breeding (equestrian tourism, onotherapy - use of the donkey with the handicapped and in the treatment of nervous depression - dasina milk).
